Day 112 - Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Despite the late retirement to one's chamber, it was an early rise on Good Friday in order to make it on time for tee-off at Balcarrick Golf Club, which we didn't, but it mattered not a whit. The inaugural Beshoff's Cup was up for grabs today, with the undefeated Team Trance (Conquer and myself) taking on the considerable might of Team Slice (Paul and Neil). The first 6 holes were squared, as I managed to grab halves, and then in excellent coordination when I abrupty decided to stop being any good whatsoever, Conquer took up the reins with outstanding driving and scoring to ensure a 3&2 victory.

The round, obtained via LivingSocial (another deals company) for the piffling sum of €5 per person, was most enjoyable, even despite the unexpected smattering of rain for about 6 holes. Even at the regular green fee of €20 represents excellent value for money, as the course is a tricky lil' bugger, with ponds and rivers aplenty, all of which I managed to frequent. Afterwards, the clubhouse was visited for a delicious lunch (as breakfast consisted of a Mars Bar) of chicken curry, rice and chips.

Day 111 - Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Casual wear and Cadbury Creme Eggs were the order of the day at Northern Trust, in honour of it being the last work-day before the 4-day Easter weekend. Evening falls and with it, time for Wholly TNDC Thursday, the most splendid darting evening of the year so far, with no less than 16 athletes competing for double TNDC World Championship ranking points, and a number of non-participative onlookers to boot. There was an epic struggle between Gar "Milky Bar" Kiernan, free from the shackles of parenthood and husbandry for the entire evening, and John "The Equaliser" Delaney, who ultimately prevailed to win a 30th TNDC title.

Play continued until well after 1am, with Doolan's pleasingly ignoring the archaic ruling in Ireland where alcohol is unavailable for purchase from the stroke of Good Friday midnight. Birthday boy Justin "Judge Dredd" Bartholomew arrived late in the day to celebrate his 30th and was in a considerably advanced state of refreshment. He would go on to leave his jacket and wallet behind, but naturally it was unharmed. Anto "The Anto-Christ" Macken ironically is an Easter child too, and he celebrated with a fine haul of 17 points which will propel him into the World Championship qualifying places as it stands.

For the first time ever in TNDC history at Doolan's, Frank asked us to sup up and finish our drinks, but small wonder, as it was now after 2am! Conquer to the rescue, throwing open his lavish Bloodbank House apartment to the TNDC masses who drank his beer supplies dry, ate his pizza and bawled mercilessly along to several U2 videos being played on his magnificent projector screen, with the cacophony reaching an ear-splitting crescendo for With Or Without You. After 6am, with all substances devoured, it was time for the plague of satisfied locusts to move onwards.

Today saw a rare external luncheon foray, to Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Temple Bar's Meeting House Square, with world-renowned TNDC athlete Rory "Razor Sharp" Wilson. Cajun chicken bites with chilli and sour cream dip opened the agenda nicely, then I opted for the Greek Lamb burger - deliciously tender lamb with hummus, tzatziki, tomato and lettuce - and chips. The bill was almost entirely covered by a €25 voucher that I had acquired, gratis, from Pigsback - great success!

Homeward after work for more relaxation and bloggage - normally a foray to the cinema wold have occurred but awkward timings and a poor bill of fare conspired against this.

Evening arrived, and with it, time to blood in some new athletes to the wonders of Metro Golf. Playing inddor golf for the first time, Enda, Eoin and Ed (The 3 Es) coped well with the stern task set by the breezy Pebble Beach course. Former international athlete (I actually use the term in its literal meaning in this instance) Enda got off to a roaring start, suggesting his 36 handicap was far too generous, although the effects of five pint bottles of Bulmer's did stymie his scoring efforts towards the round's end although he did amass a magnificent 38-point score to ensure victory. Ed got the hang of things towards the end in particular, amassing a creditable 20 points, and there were also green shoots for Eoin who had previously only played Pitch and Putt. I had a decent round with 34 points off a handicap of 29.

The weather in Dublin remains glorious, and by glorious in April I mean sunny, blue skies, coolish wind and temperatures approaching 20 degrees Centigrade. In truth, the months of April and May now harbour our finest weather, with June iffy and July and August home to our rainy/downpour season.

Whilst utterly uneventful today, it was good to recover from the energetic weekend and catch up on some blog-writing.

Day 107 - Sunday, April 17th, 2011

After a very comfortable sleep on the fold out Travelodge mattress-couch, it was time to enjoy 3 minutes of glorious Barnsley sunshine before getting a taxi with the Kirkulator to the Metrodome. Hearty congratulations were extended to young David Coyne on the occasion of his run to the final in last night's Youths tournament, netting him a delicious £400 in semi-filthy cash.

The random factor, like a tractor, weaved its magic way to the determination that Board 6 should be my realm for the afternoon.

Preliminary Round

Michael Rosenauer            6        Ian Lever          2

Awful darts from both to start (the first leg was a 30+ dart affair), then both improved, especially Michael, who was rewarded with a "gut gespielt" (well played) from me afterwards, provoking delight that the marker spoke German.

Round 1 (Last 128)

Denis Ovens             6         Jon Archer     0

Alas, Jon's darts were even poorer than yesterday's, and his body language screamed "I hate this and don't want to be here." Denis scored and finished well, and the whitewash was never really in doubt.

Adrian Lewis           6         Dylan Duo     0

After last night's Escapade, Dylan was feeling decidedly unrefreshed, and after the white-wash, he was quick to point out to Adrian that it was because of "this c**t", pointing to me, evoking laughter all round. Adrian wasn't tested at all but his mind did seem to be elsewhere.

Simon Whitlock       6        Martyn Turner    4

I'm not supposed to do it but after a couple of minutes of Martyn being on the oche, I saw Simon heading to the practice board, so went and told him that his game was on. "It can't be," he said, "I haven't even practiced." I told him about that the previous two games were 6-0 affairs but he still couldn't believe it.

Martyn has to be one of the most unlucky players on the tour at the moment - things just aren't going his way, and despite some brilliant darts, he went down against Simon who was in fine form, despite the lack of practice. Fingers crossed that Martyn's fortunes will change soon.

Michael Rosenauer     6      Steve Evans       2

Steve came onto the oche and informed me that I was his bogey marker and while such things shouldn't prey on the mind, maybe they did as he did not throw well at all, ensuring a comfortable win for Rosi, who seemed to be getting increasingly refreshed.

Round 2 (Last 64)

Denis Ovens         6         Adrian Lewis       3

Denis threw excellent solid darts, albeit a little less pacey than the previous game, and the World Champion found himself 3-0 down before winning the next leg causing him to say "Welcome to the game" to himself. Denis remained in control though to produce a shock win against Adrian, who definitely seemed in off-par mood.

Simon Whitlock    6       Michael Rosenauer   3

Michael's request that Simon throw with his left hand went unheeded. Simon established an early 3-0 lead and it went with throw from there.

Round 3 (Last 32)

Simon Whitlock     6      Denis Ovens        1

Denis' throw grew even less pacey in this match, but nothing was stopping Simon who was throwing really well. When Simon went 4-1 up in a leg that could have gone either way, Denis told Simon : "You need to lose weight" and went to colourfully vent frustration at the fact that Simon's foot pressing hard up against the oche during his (Simon's) throw was causing a creaking noise. "I dunno what you mean," said Simon and went on about his business, impressively unaffected and continuing to cause the creaking sound, going on to win the next two legs and the match, although there was heavy tension in the air.

Duties dispensed with, it was time for me to say some quick farewells and dash to the train station to get a train into Leeds where I had time to purchase a wrap and a chicken noodle salad for breakfast which was eaten aboard the bus to the toilet that is Leeds/Bradford airport, where the few facilities on offer are compacted into a ridiculously tiny space. Time for more dehumanising experiences with Ruinair who most probably arranged the requirement to go up one flight of stairs and go down another during the queue for the gate. It was great to be back in The Lighthouse before 9pm, and this was celebrated with a tremendous Chinese feast of hot 'n sour soup and chilli chicken with rice - bleedin' d'lish!

Day 106 - Saturday, April 16th, 2011

The trusty bugler was on hand at 5.10am to sound the traditional early reveille that signals the start of another darting odyssey. Al The Almera allows 5 miles to be added to his 63,000+ clock, the QuickPark shuttle bus whisks me to the aerodrome, security is successsfully negotiated and its onto the Ryanair cattle truck for multiple of their reminders that we are all numbers and not people. In yet another sign of how this country is utterly banjaxed economically, and miserably poverty-stricken, the cattle-truck to Leeds/Bradford was filled to capacity with people, all of whom were quite clearly emigrating, with half of them doing so whilst wearing Leeds United replica shirts. It was enough to instantly turn me into a balladeer, to pen a dirge of intensive drawn-out lament. The Buffoon Count on the cattle-truck was quite low, with just a few semi-buffoons aboard who failed to mask their petrification of flying by laughing at nothing every 9 seconds, but their fear was ill-advised as they and the rest of the livestock survived with ease to tell further tales.

Onwards via omnibus to Leeds train station, and from there with speed to Barnsley and its Metronome, meaning that I had arrived there over 2 hours' early, which is even considered early by English standards. It allowed time for chatterings with players, officials and markers alike, all in splendid spirits. Lunch consisted of a Superfood Salad from Boots, containing as it did all super-foods known to man (lentils, cranberries, peppers, rocket, couscous) and jolly tasty it was, although I did fear being asked to leave the premises because the meal contained no gravy, stuffing or fat.

Cue Baron Thomas de Cox, who decrees that I am to be Marker-General for Board 8 and it's off we jolly well go!

Preliminary Round

Dyson Parody     6      Paul Schofield     5

Decent darts in this one, where Paul went 4-1 up, then 5-4 behind, then drew level, then lost, then joined the small but exclusive Club Non-Hand-Shakers. It's fine Paul, I'll mark the game that you would have been marking if I wasn't here, no worries!

Round 1 (Round of 128)

Steve Farmer         6     Jon Archer         2

Steve won this easily without playing particularly well, as Jon, who seems very unhappy with his game currently, did not throw well at all.

Mervyn King        6     Dylan Duo         2

Time for pantomine baddie Merv to arrive on oche, and while he certainly wouldn't be one for amicable chat, he commited no war-crimes and was in imperious scoring form against Dylan, who put in a decent scoring performance. Mervyn is without doubt the quickest person to arrive at the oche before games - he is literally standing ready to throw when the players from the previous game are walking away from the board after shaking hands.

Mark Walsh         6     Ian Jopling     4

The last two occasions that I marked Mark, he went on to win the tournament each time, but I wasn't betting on a hat-trick after this match, where the scoring was on the low side. Ian had chances to win, had the rub of the wire gone more favourably.

Andy Jenkins        6      Dyson Parody    5

Andy was in great form and was telling me how much he enjoyed a recent exhibition in County Kerry with Colin Lloyd, and he invited me down there to a darts charity marathon taking place in August. Kerry? Darts? Pub? Yes please! Back to the match, and it was a cracking one, with both players in excellent form scoring a couple of 3-figure check-outs each. Andy gave me a bear-hug after the match, signalling delight with some return to form.

Round 2 (Last 64)

Mervyn King         6        Steve Farmer      0

Mervyn's upped his average even further in this match, to white-wash an off-form Steve. "Thanks for the lesson, Merv," said Steve afterwards, and he actually meant it.

Andy Jenkins        6        Mark Walsh         4

There was cracking banter between these two at the oche, which ws good to see. They must have been regular room-mates because Andy referred to Walshy as "my good snoring friend". The darting encounter was a tight one with Andy getting a crucial early break to seal an important win. "Jenks is back!", he shouted with delight afterwards, after delivering more bear-hugs.

Round 3 (Last 32)

Mervyn King         6         Andy Jenkins       3

Both players maintained their averages from the previous games, and tht meant a relatively comfortable win for Mervyn, although Andy was cleary pleased with his day's work.

Round 4 (Last 16)

Mervyn King          6        Terry Temple       3

PDC official and referee-par-excellence Paul Hinks asked me to mark this game which was on another board and when I arrived, both players were there. I noticed that a previous marker had flung 3 marker-pens on the ground to the left of the oche and was heading to pick them up whe Mervyn cme up and asked me (perfectly nicely though) if I could pick them up. "At once, Your Highness," I didn't say. I was a little surprised to see Terry in the last 16 but the reason why became evident very quickly when he went 3-0 up with phenomenal scoring. He had 8 darts to win the 4th leg but when he didn't, his form collapsed, and Mervyn won six in a row to take the match.

Quarter Final

Gary Anderson      6       Mervyn King       3

I believe this to be the best match that I have marked to date, in terms of quality, and that's saying something. It was played at a furious pace and the scoring from both players was huge, particularly Gary, who is just about the best player in the world currently. Relations between the two players were very warm indeed, and they were mutually appreciative of each other before during and after the game. I came off the board afterwards, buzzing and thinking to myself, "This is why I do this" and had a moment during the game where it dawned on me, "I'm marking a match between Gary Anderson and Mervyn King - how awesome is this?"

Time for a few Carling brews, priced at £2.80 (€3.25) and served by the bar-girl who constantly seems to be whacked out on space-drugs, uttering overly-pitched inanities which also make clear that she despises her job. But I digress! Again! Time for more chatter, with young Irish starlet Ryan Maher and his dad as the wait the two hours or so for the Youth Tournament to get going which doesn't commence until after the main final, even though 12 boards are free for 90 minutes beforehand, and the youths must register over two hours before kick-off. Anyway, he's in great form, despite local parochial idiots back at home decreeing that he can't play for his pub team anymore because he is part of the PDC. Cretins.

I and a hundred others crowd around the barriers to watch the final between Gary Anderson and Phil Taylor, and it's an epic, with Gary winning 6-4. Myself and Kirk bump into him as we leave the Metrodome and he tells us that the £6,000 winnings will be going on a deposit on a Jaguar - nice! Chizzy Rascal very kindly gives room-mate Kirkulator and I a lift to the luxuriant 7-star Travelodge on the Doncaster Road, supreme value at £14.50 each per night.

A quick change and it's off to the local Black Bull for a pint and the last half-hour of the FA Cup Semi-Final between Man United and Man City, which City win 1-0. It's another unsavoury element of a bad day for United fan and Mr. Non-Shakey-Hands man Paul Schofield, who is there watching it. We have a chat and he is clearly down at not getting the rub of the wire or of the draws these days.

With the match over, time to nip over to the Golden Arches for a Chicken Legend meal, then back to the Black Bull for more ales. We join Steve Farmer and his lovely fiancee at their table, and gentleman as ever, Steve buys me a pint for marking his games earlier. (I later reciprocate, with one for his missus, to say thanks for being thankful)

It's karaoke night and after an hour or so, I'm up singing Unchained Melody, and whilst Kirk is up delivering an incredibly stylish rendition of the Vengaboys' "Boom Boom Boom Boom", our fellow markers Daz, Scott and Stu arrive, agog at the aural and visual spectacle before them. Daz and Scott join in the karaoke fun with epic renditions of Superstitious (Daz) and Livin La Vida Loca (Scott). There's also time for me to murder Bohemian Rhapsody, Molly Malone and The Irish Rover before closing bell.

In walks Iberian dart sensations Dylan Duo and Antonio Alcinas, who are keen to party, and desperate as I am for them to have their heartfelt wishes come true, Kirk and I reluctantly (snigger) agree to accompany them into town. A taxi is summonsed, I command it to make a beeline for Escapade and with some chatter to the manager at the door, we're given wristbands for the VIP area and the bar-staff are accosted at haste for kalimochus and Jagerbombs. The craic is on and at the dancefloors though, where a further intoxicating cocktail of lovely ladies and banging choons prevail. I bump into Ricky Evans who is busy celebrating his victory in the Youth Tournament earlier tonight. I congratulate him and tell him he can easily push on to even greater tings, as I have marked him a couple of times and had previously remarked how good a player he is. At 3.30am it's time to retire back to the Travelodge, to prepare thoroughly for another day of markage......

The hankering to have a few tumblers of brew after work was great, but alas/thankfully no such opportunity presented itself, and I headed back to the Lighthouse for some blogging and relaxing, managing to get to sleep before midnight for the first time in many weeks, which was most usual, being the eve of a 5.10am arousal for another darting expedition.

Day 104 - Thursday, April 14th, 2011

The weather, of which I do not speak too much, is very pleasing these days, making particularly pleasant the walks to work and from there to the 80th Thursday Night Darts Club, which once again was at Doolan's. There were nine athletes in attendance - the highest figure since mid-January - and the standard was particularly magnficent (by modest TNDC measurements). Gar "Milky Bar" Kiernan set the tone by busting a 132 finish (scoring 140 instead) before hitting a sublime 126 finish (treble 20, double 16, double 17) as well as a 97 finish and a 140 score, also registered by Conor "The Conqueror" O'Keeffe.

Alas, Gar had to leave early due to paternal duties, and his generous lead was erased by John "The Equaliser" Delaney, giving him a record 29th TNDC title. The night also saw the welcome return of Lara "Tryples" Della Volpe after a multi-week darting sabbatical and of Justin "Judge Dredd" Bartholomew who after a couple of hours of abstinence, proceeded to drain Doolan's singular keg of €3.50 Olm lager. With so many athletes present, the craic was particularly mighty, most especially during the games of Lives and Reverse Lives.

Despite fine Centra Chicken Noodles and half of an utterly d'lish 12 inch Chicken and red onion pizza in Doolan's (delivered by local Italian eaterie Di Bella), I felt that I needed to boost the revenue of the newly-opened local chippy, with a healthy aluminium tray packed with chipped potato, rice and curry sauce goodness.

Desperately little else to report about the day, really, save that the Centra beside work has decided to vend giant portions of tasty chicken with (proper) noodles for the mere sum of €4.50, and bleedin' d'lish they are too. Yes, it's a big news day, people!

After much anticipation, the first Tuesday Night Golf Club major of the year - the Northern Trust Open, was staged at Metro Golf, featuring 6 athletes. It was a tight low-scoring affair, with just 7 points separating first (Danny The Swede) and joint last (me and English) on the fiendishly difficult Cog Hill course. It was the usual up and down affair for me, scoring 9 points on the front nine and 17 on the back nine, although normally it's the other way around, due to the refreshing capacity of Heineken. Highlight of the round was securing the Closest To The Pin accolade with a shot to within 19 feet of the hole - great success! Onwards to The Oarsman for celebratory pints of plain and much post-match discussion, heated in the main.

After weeks spent correcting beastly examination papers, this evening marked a welcome return to cinematic pleasures, on the double, naturlich. First up was Source Code (4.5 / 10) - a rip-off of Memento and Groundhog Day which was strangely pleasant to watch, despite having moon crater sized holes in the plot and appalling script and acting from the very many bit-actors involved, especially the ridiculously hammy Source Code Project boss. Due to scheduling more than anything, next up was The Room-mate (6/10), a frat teen scary movie flick, so expectations were greatly diminished but surprisingly it was a very enjoyable romp with excellent acting from the ladies and spoiled only by the dreamy hunk actor type whose gomey pearly grin demanded multiple head-punches.

So here we are - 100 days of blogging! Thanks to everyone for reading and to all those responsible for the 5,000+ hits achieved to date. Particular thanks to all those who have given the blog such positive feedback - it is hugely appreciated!

The morning got underway with a drive down to the homeland of Gallonbawn, made delightfully speedy by the Port Tunnel, the M50 and the M3. It was great as ever to see Mum and Dad, and Shane and Suzetta came over from Lavey for dinner too. It was my first time to see Suzetta with her bundle of joy, which has been behaving rather feistily, apparently - that's a McEvoy alright!

Dinner was the usual scrumptious affair - roast beef, gravy, mashed potatoes with home-grown chives, and veg, followed by home made apple tart and ice cream - bleedin' d'lish! After much chat and chillage, it was time to head back to The Big Smoke to watch the final round of The Masters, which will be long remembered for Rory McIlroy's loss of a four-stroke lead to finish 8 strokes behind - nice to see him philosophical about it afterwards and fingers crossed he'll win one or more Majors in the near future.

Day 98 - Friday, April 8th, 2011

There was an element of extra-curricular activity to work today in the guise of a Grand National Sweep that I was asked to organise. The necessary 40 willing participants were easily sourced, each coughing up a fiver for a total prize pool of €200.

Work dispensed with, it was off for a couple of black brews with Johnny D in the Gin Palace before we headed out to the Maldron Hotel Tallaght by LUAS to a darts exhibition featuring Dennis Priestley, Terry Jenkins, Vincent van der Voort and Michael van Gerwen. Paul Hinks was flown over too to be main stage MC, with me MCing the other board for free beer and a modest cash fee. As usual with Irish exhibitions, the event started well after its scheduled 9pm slot, but John and I had a great chat with Paul discussing which together with the complimentary pints of Guinness made the time fly by!

Unfortunately the crowd was very small - about 50 people, but the show went on and for the first half, I MC'd Terry Jenkins and Dennis Priestley who played 7 games of 801 pairs, each with a different partner for each leg. Both were in great jovial form - Terry the Goldfish didn't have a clue who I was, as usual, whilst Dennis the Elephant didn't forget, and also definitely played quite a bit quicker than usual.

After the interval, it was decided to just have one board of action, leaving me free to enjoy more refreshing complimentary porter, and have my first ever game with a professional, and not one but two, as it was me and Dennis versus Terry and Joe Bloggs, which the latter won narrowly. I'd say I averaged 45, high scoring with 81!

There was some entertaining needle between Michael van Gerwen and Shane O'Connor, who lives nearby and was a little miffed not to have been one of the featured pros of the night. It is an absolute pain in the hole to listen to Shane wittering on about how good he is, but the self-confidence is admirable and definitely beneficial to his game - I definitely can see him put in a break-through performance in one of the upcoming PDC tournaments.

At the end of the night, there was a raffle and an auction which Dennis MC'd (brilliantly), and myself and Johnny each put in a number of unsuccessful bids, more to boost the charity coffers more than anything. Given the low attendance and high number of free beers enjoyed, I declined organiser Keith's kind offer of payment. Hopefully he gives it another bash, as it was a really enjoyable night and very professionally run - so he just needs to get the marketing right for the next one, and from tonight's acorns many oak trees will grow.

We hung around to play a few legs of darts on the 2nd board and chat with Dennis, then all-a-sudden it was 2.15am and very much time to get a taxi home.

Day 97 - Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Thursday evening, and it's time for another Thursday Night Darts Club, the 79th in its august and distinguished history. Seven athletes contested the event, and Gar "Milky Bar" Kiernan struck an ominous tone when he hit 180 with his 1st 3 practice darts, and sure enough he went on to win his 3rd title by a comfortable margin. "Crackin'" Anto Macken made his 2011 debut, amassing a useful 20 points, to add even further interest to the race for TNDC World Championship places. The Top 12 at the end of November will each win a berth, with the top four advancing straight to the quarter-finals.

Day 96 - Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

In the glorious sunshine, I headed by taxi in the early evening to The Helix at Dublin City University to be Master of Ceremonies for the 17th time for the 26th Annual DCU Societies Awards. (Am I as old as 17 for this to be possible? I simply hadn't realised!) After a brief run-through with Show Director Shea McNeilis, it was time for the Nominees' Wine Reception in the Albert College building where guest of honour Senator David Norris arrived at the stroke of the appointed time of 6pm, and he was in effervescent form from the off.

The Nominees Dinner took place at 7pm and a very fine feast it was too, of tomato soup, supreme of chicken and raspberry roulade. Onwards to the Helix for the main event where the 300 guests were treated to a rousing opening from the Traditional Music society. Time to take to the stage, greet the guests, introduce the acts and announce the winners in the 6 different categories.

Senator Norris' address was a rousing affair and he has definitely secured a few hundred votes for his Irish Presidential bid later in the autumn. Star of the show was Lisa Hopper, winning the Best Fresher award, and bringing the house down with an acapella number which prompted me to quip that the Senator should book her to sing at his inauguration - hopefully it happens!

The ceremony at an end, it was time to evacuate en masse into the lobby where DJ Shea span wheels of steel of the most unashamed cheese, which the revellers loved! It was a pleasure to lead one of the lengthy "boats" of Rock The Boat and the even lengthier Locomotion train which snaked along a number of inter-connected floors! The crowd kept baying for more, and the choons continued until 2.15am!

Move along, nothing to see here! An entirely unmemorable and unexciting day, recharging from recent efforts and building energies for some busy days and nights ahead!

Day 94 - Monday, April 4th, 2011

A day off from Northern Trust, but no rest for the wicked, as the final 100 examination scripts had to be negotiated, taking virtually the entire day. But negotiated they were and now it's time to submit the results to the Institute and wait patiently for the examination fee to hit one's account - yay!
